MIS Thesis v. non-Thesis: What should I choose?

Each student who is accepted into the Master in International Studies program is presented with the option of either writing a thesis or completing additional classes in order to complete their degree. The Namseoul GEI has developed these two tracks in order to foster equity in education and support students unique educational needs and goals. When deciding what option is right for you there are many different things to consider such as career goals, program costs, and schedule. Here is a quick look at how the two tracks compare:

Thesis Track -

Consider this option if you are a student interested in:

Pursuing a PhD

Teaching at the university level

Publishing articles

Associated Costs: 220,000 won Thesis Fee paid in the 4th semester

Students who choose the thesis option will have an additional fee during their 4th semester. This fee is a standard Namseoul Graduate School fee assessed by the university to cover administrative costs.

GPA Requirement: In order to be eligible for the Thesis Track, the Namseoul Graduate School requires students to have a 3.0 GPA or above.

If you choose to do a thesis, there are a few different schedules you can choose. Here are three options of what your class and thesis workload might look like.

Non-Thesis Track -

Consider this option if you are a student interested in:

Taking more classes and studying additional topics

Skill building rather than research

Completing a degree without worrying about a thesis

Concluding your educational career with a Masters

Associated Costs: 1.2 million won Additional Credits Fee paid in the 4th semester

Due to the number of additional classes needed to graduate, the Non-Thesis Track has an additional expense associated which is assessed in the 4th semester of study.

Example Timelines:

If you choose not to do a thesis it will be important that you plan ahead and make sure you enroll in the correct number of courses in the first and second semesters. This is important in order not to be overloaded and to prevent needing to extend into the 5th semester.
